Today's Daily News is not connected to the earlier New York Daily News, which shut down in 1906. As of 2019, it was the eleventh-highest circulated newspaper in the United States. It reached its peak circulation in 1947, at 2.4 million copies a day. It was founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson as the Illustrated Daily News. “Newspapers,” he said, leaning back against the bar, “will always break your heart. The New York Daily News, officially titled the Daily News, is an American newspaper based in Jersey City, New Jersey. It’s only a matter of time before you get fired. Being a tabloid editor, he told us that night, was like being manager of the Mets. At a bar near the paper, the non-drinking, now ex-editor did his best to cheer everyone else up. Hamill took his ouster with the same quiet good grace with which he handled most problems. More than a hundred people signed within a couple of hours. When the newsroom rumors began to circulate that Hamill was on thin ice, the staff put together a petition demanding that he remain. He devoted a full eight pages to a photo and story spread about the life of a Bronx prostitute who was desperately trying to kick her heroin habit. When a reporter asked to travel to Mexico- a previously unheard-of expense-to write about a manufacturing plant that had relocated there after decades in Long Island City, he said yes, and ran the story that resulted on the front page. He rekindled the paper’s original mission to write about the troubles and travails of everyday New Yorkers. Here was Hamill, the veteran newsman who had put in tabloid tours of duty at the Daily News, the Post and New York Newsday, whose columns were often prose poems that lifted the city and its people. Hamill’s arrival was celebrated as something of a rebirth for staff and readers alike. When he was appointed, just eight months earlier, the paper was still recovering from a long and bitter strike, followed by bankruptcy and a steady slide in readership. In September, 1997, when Pete Hamill, who died on Wednesday, was fired from his job as the editor of the Daily News, the staff took him out to tell him how much his short reign at the newspaper had meant to them. ![]() Photograph by Jim Cooper / AP / Shutterstock ![]() Hamill took his ouster from the Daily News with the same quiet good grace with which he handled most problems.
